Cookie Notice
This notice lists every cookie kavarn.com sets, who sets it, what it is for and how long it lasts. Analytics cookies load only if you accept them, and declining costs you nothing.

What cookies are, and what we use them for
Cookies are small text files placed on your device when you visit a website. Similar technologies, including pixels, tags and local storage, do comparable things. This notice covers all of them, whatever they are called.
We use cookies for two purposes: to make the site work, and to understand how it is used so we can improve it. We do not use cookies for advertising, we do not use them to track you across other websites, and we do not sell what they tell us.
The categories we use
Strictly necessary. These make the site function. On this site that is one cookie, and its entire job is to remember whether you accepted or declined analytics. It cannot be switched off through this notice, because without it we would have to ask you again on every page.
Analytics. These are set by Google Analytics 4. They tell us which pages are read, how people arrive, which guides and tools get used, and where people give up. We use that to decide what to write next. They are set only if you accept.
Advertising. We do not use these. If that ever changes, this notice will be updated before the cookies are set, not afterwards.
The cookies we actually set
Read out of a browser after accepting, on October 8, 2026, rather than copied from documentation. That matters more than it sounds: Google's own documentation says the analytics cookies last two years, and the browser stores them for 400 days, because browsers now cap any cookie at 400 days. The figures below are the ones observed. If Google changes a name or a lifetime, this table changes with it.
| Cookie | Set by | Category and purpose | Lifetime |
|---|---|---|---|
kavarn_consent | Kavarn | Strictly necessary. Remembers whether you accepted or declined analytics cookies, so you are not asked again on every page. First-party. It holds one word, accepted or declined, and nothing else. It is the only thing this site stores without asking. | 12 months |
_ga | Google Analytics | Analytics. Distinguishes one visitor from another. Set only after you accept. Deleted when you switch to decline. Google documents 2 years, and the r2 draft said 2 years; the browser actually stores 400 days, because Chrome caps any cookie lifetime at 400 days and GA4 now sets it to that. Observed, not copied. | 400 days, about 13 months |
_ga_S33MEJC7J5 | Google Analytics | Analytics. Maintains session state for this property.
What does not set a cookie
- Netlify, our host. No cookies. Measured 6 October 2026 with `curl -sI` against four URLs on two hostnames: every response returned HTTP 200 and none carried a Set-Cookie header. Re-measured on every deploy since.
- Advertising networks. None, because the site uses none. Google Signals and ad personalization are switched off in the property and in the config call, and there is no Google Ads link.
Your choices
When you first visit, you can accept or decline analytics cookies. Accept and Decline are the same size and sit side by side, and neither is pre-selected. Declining costs you nothing: no part of this site requires analytics to function, and no content is withheld from people who decline.
You can change your choice at any time using the Cookie settings link in the footer of every page. Switching from accept to decline deletes the analytics cookies immediately and stops the tag for the rest of your visit.
You can also block or delete cookies in your browser settings, and Google publishes a browser add-on that opts you out of Google Analytics on every site. If you clear your cookies, you clear your stored preference along with them, and we will ask you again.
Nothing loads before you choose
Until you accept, this site makes no request to Google or to any other third party, and runs no analytics code. That includes the consent signalling some sites send before a choice is made: we send none. If you decline, the same remains true for the rest of your visit.
Changes
If we add or remove cookies, we update this notice and the table above at the same time. The date at the top shows when it last changed.
